Scientist Writer

After eight years as a biologist, I dropped out of a Ph.D. program at U.C. Berkeley. I left to pursue a career in writing. While I’m primarily a journalist, I’ve also written personal essays and pieces of fiction that have been published in anthologies and literary journals.

I’m currently a Ben Bagdikian Editorial Fellow at Mother Jones, and as a journalist, my articles have appeared in Slate, Scientific American, Teen Vogue, Sierra Magazine, and Discover, among other outlets. I returned to journalism after several years working in science communication at the NIH. I chose to leave in February of 2025 in response to the policies of the current administration (which I wrote about for Slate).

A fan of all forms of prose, I also work on creative projects. I’ve published fiction and personal essays, and I’m a reader for creative nonfiction at Wallstrait literary journal.

I live in Oakland, California and spend a lot of my time staring into the ocean.
